Socialism

…as the Millennial religion:

The Millennials can’t remember very much – and they don’t learn very much either. It’s easy being hot for socialism or communism when you actually have a very little idea of what it is and what it did throughout the 20th century. And the Ys have that ignorance in spades; one third of them think that George W Bush killed more people than Stalin and 42 per cent have never heard of Mao – but over 70 per cent agree with Bernie Sanders. Some research suggests that only 15 per cent actually have a correct understanding of socialism. It’s not just politics; the Millennials are the most woefully undereducated and miseducated generation in a very long time. To be fair, that’s not strictly their fault; that attaches itself again to their Boomer grandparents who have been in charge of our failing education systems during this time. Combine the modern indoctrination-cum-dumbification taking place in schools and universities with the attention span-killing impact of information technology and social media, and you have a barely literate cohort, which is simply not equipped with the necessary mental tools to learn about the real world even if they wanted to.

Any surprises that socialism is now nearly synonymous with Gen Y?

This is a disaster.

[Late-morning update]

Socialists are parasites.

Yes.

  1. George W Bush killed more people than Stalin

It should be noted that the vast majority of deaths in Iraq were not carried out by American troops but rather Iranian proxies, Syrian proxies, and AQ killing Iraqis. That Obama partnered with all of these groups during his administration is a disgrace and destabilized the region and Europe. Not sure what Trump is doing in regard to Iran in Iraq but now that they are so dug in, not sure what could be done.

the attention span-killing impact of information technology and social media

The flip side is that it has never been easier to disseminate information and the tools to present information in an easily understandable format are ubiquitous, if a little expensive. This is one of the reasons why we see the Democrat media and technocrats trying to deplatform people from social media and the internet in general.

  2. Well it is perfectly normal that people remember most of what affected them. But also labeling any socialist as a Stalin, Mao, or Pol Pot wannabe is simply, well, silly. Would it really kill you to have state medical insurance like other countries like, I dunno, Canada or most of the EU have? Even having a system similar to Switzerland’s (which is basically what Obamacare/Romneycare is) seems to be too much for you people. Instead you just have a reflex backlash. i.e. a Socialist Derangement Syndrome.

This is just an outsider’s view but I think you are turning your country into a basket case like Brazil and inequality indexes over the past couple of decades seem to show this. If you think billionaires are going to save you and keep the US technological advantage going forward you have another thing coming. Any country without an expanded middle class is always going to lag behind. The US capital system is increasingly being run by either duopolies or oligopolies all across the spectrum. Which is kind of fun actually since you seem to be headed towards Marx’s vision of socialism in that case.

You guys forget your own traditions like Theodore Roosevelt’s anti-monopoly actions. Do it at your own peril.

    1. All socialists are murderers and thieves at heart. They all believe they have a right to steal other people’s stuff, and they all end up murdering those who don’t want their stuff stolen, if they remain in power long enough.

And US healthcare is a disaster because of government interference, not because there isn’t enough government in the healthcare business.

      But, hey, SJWs always lie.

      1. Well, perhaps you should re-read Adam Smith again.

“No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable.”

“The disposition to admire, and almost to worship, the rich and the powerful, and to despise, or, at least, to neglect persons of poor and mean condition is the great and most universal cause of the corruption of our moral sentiments.”

Or perhaps my favorite in the current globalized trade world.

“But what all the violence of the feudal institutions could never have effected, the silent and insensible operation of foreign commerce and manufactures gradually brought about. These gradually furnished the great proprietors with something for which they could exchange the whole surplus produce of their lands, and which they could consume themselves,
without sharing it either with tenants or retainers. All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind. As soon, therefore, as they could find a method of consuming the whole value of their rents themselves, they had no disposition to share them with any other persons. For a pair of diamond buckles, perhaps, or for something as frivolous and useless, they exchanged the maintenance, or, what is the same thing, the price of the maintenance of 1000 men for a year, and
with it the whole weight and authority which it could give them. The buckles, however, were to be all their own, and no other human creature was to have any share of them; whereas, in the more ancient method of expense, they must have shared with at least 1000 people. With the judges that were to determine the preference, this difference was perfectly decisive; and thus, for the gratification of the most childish, the meanest, and the most sordid of all vanities they gradually bartered their whole power and authority.”
