  1. Mostly it’s the slower tempo. I think if it were at the original tempo, minor key or not, it wouldn’t have sounded like an “intense ballad.”

  2. We attend an annual Christmas concert at George Mason University, and the people who put it on are quite talented composers in their own right. Last year they played a number of traditional Christmas pieces transposed to minor mode. It was hysterically funny.

  3. Musical notation and definition has always struck me as a disorganized jumble of opaque concepts.

Not that I’ve put much time into studying that stuff. Just enough to be able to play “Stardust” on the piano.

    1. One could say the same of mathematics and be just as wrong. Any field of human endeavor that is not utterly trivial has a body of theory and an attendant jargon.

I’ve met quite a number of people in my life who took the view that, “I don’t understand any of that so it can’t be very important.” They were all, without exception, dumb as a box of rocks.

Show me where I said musical notation isn’t important.
I speak only of how it appears to me and admit the fact that it’s because I haven’t studied it.

Don’t put words in my mouth please.

I will say that some fields of endeavor jargon are more understandable BY ME , more quickly, than musical notation.
