A better way to phrase this in modern English is probably “Why are you?” It is about the discovery and pursuit of virtue. In fact there has long been discussion about the phrase “pursuit of happiness” as a self-evident truth really meant “pursuit of virtue”. But I suppose in the Founder’s minds the more inherently understood word “happiness” doesn’t require all the contextual subtext implied by the word “virtue”. Although it was well understood by the Founders that the virtuous by definition are happiest.
