Boycott Yahoo?

John Weidner (and others) think that we should boycott Yahoo over their scummy deal with China to restrict access to some sites from over there.

Fine with me, but how do I do it? What is it that Yahoo provides, that I should quit using? I never even go to the site.

I don't think Yahoo has any real purpose other than maintaining the price of Yahoo stock. So any buzz about a boycot should sting them.

But my idea hasn't attracted much interest, so I'm letting it drop. Perhaps when we've dealt with IraqIranNorthKorea, we can focus on the Chinesians ...

John, it's kinda weird, but when I got your email, I had the same thought that Rand did: I never use Yahoo's site. I guess some people must, but who? What for? The search engine is lousy, and all those awful services look like the old Compuserve used to - and apparently have a lot of the same (idiots) people using them.

I still read the top stories from AP and Reuters there (old habit). It's fairly popular for their financial site, too, I guess. And some people evidently don't mind having a webmail account on a domain that's a major source of spam, either.

As with Mr. Quick and Mr. Simberg, I never use Yahoo. However, Yahoo has has some kind of corporate deal to provide a corporate oriented Yahoo, which is called "My Yahoo". Cisco makes use of this service which is advertised to the peons as "Cisco My Yahoo". Personally, I have taken to using it as a coporate approved curse - "We're going to do it my way, and any one who doesn't like that can just Cisco My Yahoo".

I have two points to make...

1) I seem to recall the country of France attempting to sue Yahoo into removing references to Nazi sites from their search engine to which the Yahoo boys responded with something similar to "come get us". Why the sudden change of heart when it comes to China?

2) I'm already boycotting Yahoo due to their constant bombardment of popup ads. If sites that use popups aren't hurt financially (by a lack of traffic and thus a lack or ad revenue) the web will be poluted by them (it's already happening).

Ben (recent Google convert)

i think the change of heart is because they are doing just what Enron and Global Crossing did, which is, ANYTHING to keep the stock price up.

I don't think any of them are crooks or bad guys, they've just lost their way in the strange world of the Bubble. Madness of Crowds, and all that...

Doesn't Yahoo own Google?
