Maybe I Missed Them

Were any Iraqis waving French flags yesterday?

I didn't see any, either.

No German flags either, they did get their embassy trashed (along with the UN). Looks like the Iraqis DO know their enemies are.

The US were probably not providing them with any. Flags don't just materialise out of thin air you know.

Hypothetically, suppose Saddam had won this war, as unlikely as that is. What do you suppose the people would be doing. They'd be cheering and waving flags and yelling support for Saddam. That's what this brutalised people have been taught. No matter what you come out cheering and celebrating the victory with whoever happens to have won.

THe Slovakian embassy was trashed, too. Any comment on that, William? :)

Do you have a credible cite for that, Ralf?

Robert Fisk doesn't qualify... ;-)

Posted by Rand Simberg at April 10, 2003 04:26 PM

You've got me there, Rand. ;)

Then again, there are no reports of the Russian or Chinese embassies getting looted, and those countries opposed the war too (granted, their governments were less obnoxious about it than Schroeder or Chirac).

It might be that the US military had three embassy security teams and 6 embassies.

Which ones should they have picked?

"Were any Iraqis waving French flags yesterday?"

Uhm, those are the all-white ones, correct?

(At least Fisk was able to save the EU flag tossed from the German embassy.)

I'm definitely not convinced of that. I think
that the good citizens of Iraq are quite capable
of distinguishing tyranny from Liberty, and
quite capable of understanding that a victory
by US forces represents the latter, rather
than the former.

Is there a term for the insinuation that Arab
peoples are incapable of identifying and
enjoying Liberty? One apt term is
"soft White Supremecy". It means, "Sure, we lilly white descendents of Europeans
are capable of enjoying Liberty. But Arabs? Nahhhhhhh."

Hmmm. "soft White Supremacy." I've been needing a good term for one of my pet peeves against the Left.

Thanks, Tom. Did you coin that?

Right wing fascists are the racists not the progressives.
