Hmmm...

As far as Mars is concerned, it seems "greed" will not be a significant factor for the foreseeable future at least. There is a huge financial burden while the only BENEFITS tend to be indirect and mostly related to scientific discovery and perhaps industrial spin-offs. Therefore, I would say the Queen Isabella/Columbus analogy is false and Hartmann is right.

Hartmann is "right" in what sense? That the only reason to go to Mars is for science, or that it must be an international effort, or that we can't allow capitalism there without such an international effort? I don't see how you've defended any of those propositions.

Anyway, in theory, one could make money on Mars simply by offering services to people who want to go there, or live there, but in any even "greed" can take many forms.
