Delicious Justice (OK, maybe not delicious)

Dumbass siphons gas from camper, gets sewage instead. Hat tip: Dave Barry.

This may or may not be the right forum for this sort of comment, but c'est la vie...

Andrew, I've noticed that the links you provide in your posts open within the same browser window as the blog (other than the comments, of course). Having read this blog for some time, I'm used to the links opening in a new window a la Rand. I've since gotten in the habit of closing my browser window once I'm done with whatever external link I'm reading. Just gets a little frustrating when I have to open a new browser window because I didn't check to see who was actually doing the posting.

I figured it was a default setting on the blog software, but I guess that's not the case...

I'm not complaining (too loudly), I'm just sayin'...

John - thanks for the heads-up. I hadn't noticed that. I'll figure out how to fix it and switch to Rand's standard.

I've actually been meaning to berate Andrew about that and dock his pay. Well, not really, because I keep forgetting to mention it to him.

I include a target attribute within my links (target="_ ") to open up a new browser window, and it would probably help if Andrew does for consistency as well.

By the way, does anyone know how to set the target so it opens up a new tab in Mozilla (as well as a new window if the browser doesn't allow tabbing)? I've noticed that the above target does open a new tab in Opera, but in Mozilla it launches a new browser.

Since the topic came up, I personally would prefer the behavior of Andrew's links. In Safari at least, I can open any link in a new window just by holding down a key when I click on the link. Unfortunately, the opposite behavior of forcing a link to open in the same window is not as easy (copy link, paste into address bar, hit return). I've submitted that as a new feature report, but it hasn't happened yet.

To my mind it all comes down to allowing the user to browse however they want. Then again, I use a personal style sheet to override annoying display and layout features so I may be on the extreme side. I do agree, though, that they should probably all work the same way.

I dont' know how to open a new tab using the target feature ... and I get paid to know this stuff. If you figure that out, that would rock.

I prefer to have no target, but I accept the logic of launching a new window. I also accept the logic of consistancy on TTM.com.

Cheers

Doesn't anyone at the Mozilla project know? I didn't think that it was opening up a new tab that would be the challenge--I thought that it was opening up a new tab that would also open up new browsers when the browser doesn't support tabs, and also remain compatible with Opera.

Somehow, to me, Opera seems to have gotten it right, by only having a single instance open. Mozilla is a weird hybrid, allowing both tabs and new browser instances. Since they did this, it would be nice if they'd tell us how they're invoked.
