Thirty-Five Years Ago

Alan Henderson has a photo tribute.

Jim Oberg has some thoughts as well.

I don't agree with his thesis. If we return to the moon, I want to see it done for that other traditional motivator--not fear, but greed. And it's not obvious to me that international cooperation in space has the benefits he thinks it does, but read and judge for yourself.

[Update an hour or so later]

It's still not too late to plan a commemorative dinner tonight.

[Continuing updates]

Alan Boyle has a roundup of links, and commentary. I was sorry not to see him this past weekend at the Return to the Moon Conference.

Mark Whittington has an optimistic view of the future.

Here's space.com's tribute.

A Forgotten Anniversary
Excerpt: I forgot to mention that yesterday was the anniversary of the first human footstep on ground that is not Earth (July 20, 1969). Go get QuickTime, and go get this. Then Rand Simberg has a roundup, and some thoughts.

It's nice to be missed, Rand. ... I'm also sorry I couldn't make the Return to the Moon Conference. I had some family obligations to attend to. Here's wishing a fruitful Evoloterra to you and the rest of the Transterrestrial gang.

The purpose of my little Washington Dispatch piece was to suggest, while others (like the House Appropriators, may they all rot) wring their hands over issues of costs, that there is much to be gained.

There's a site that sells stock video footage of various events, including Apollo 11. Start at this page and click "Next" for other selections. (I got the image of the parachuting capsule from here.)

I have an Apollo 11 anniversary page at:

http://www.donaldedavis.com/PARTS/Apollo30.html

which is updated yearly with a brief 'prospects for return' commentary.
