Irritating

Someone should tell Dari Alexander that Mackinac Island is pronounced "Mack-i-naw," not "Mack-i-nack." You can sure tell she's not a Michigan native.

Every part of the country has a name or two like that, just to unmask the newcomers who are pretending to be natives, or people who've never been there. Then there are names like Sequim, Puyallup, or Issaquah where you have to hear them a few times before you come close to getting them right.

This just in: Saginaw, Michigan is to be pronounced "Saginack."

Mack-in-naw? Must be the French influence.
I was less disturbed at 10 years old when
my family moved to Stockton, CA and learned
that San Joaquin County was not pronounced
San Jock-win.

It's all cool, though, I plan on retiring to
the west coast of Michigan. Even though Im
a born Buckeye.

On the road to Mackinac Its always "aw"

The WaPo story on Bush's trip to the UP described roadside signs advertising "hot pastries". Sharp powers of observation, WaPo dude.

The WaPo story on Bush's trip to the UP described roadside signs advertising "hot pastries."

That's hilarious.

They'll probably also talk about "Salt St. Marie." I'm kind of amazed that some of the news stories actually talked about yoopers.

I rode my bike thru the UP a few years back and ordered the "paystees."

The waitress told me "they are called 'pahstees,' 'paystees' are a whole different thing."

It was embarrasing, but hilarious.

Don't forget Page Alexander (kinda hot blonde, a little like a siamese cat, bass voice).

Favorite recently was when she mentioned Arapahoe County, correctly pronounced "Ah-RAP-a-hoe", Page pronunciation "ara-PAH-hoe".

Heh. The UP is a little different from everywhere else. I grew up on pasties (the meat-and-potato kind) but few outside of the UP ever hoid of em.

But I'm a born UPer, second generation. Go back any further than that and it's Quebec.

A friend of mine got slapped when he asked the waitress for a "quickie". I told him later it was pronounced "quiche".

Glad to know we're cousins, Slartibart. For such a thinly populated place, there sure do seem to be a lot of us Yupes around. Long way from home, too. Damn, I could go for a hot pastie right now!

You laugh. My family is so big, we might actually be cousins.

They come from near Lake Gogebic. I was born elsewhere in the UP.
