Misdirection

I haven't said much about the McGreevey situation (anything, come to think of it), but it's clear that it was a clever PR ploy to come out of the closet, allowing him to play victim in our PC culture, and misdirect us from the real issues of his corruption. To really understand the situation, and put it in its proper perpective: what if Bill Clinton had made Monica Lewinski his National Security Advisor? Actually, now that I think of it, he did come close to this, in naming Craig Livingstone as Chief of White House Security. Though I'm pretty sure he wasn't shtupping him.

Anyway, that's the equivalent of what McGreevey is attempting to distract us from.

Rand -

Seems to me that McGreevey at least had the decency to be scandalized by his own behavior and then actually take some meaningful public act of contrition by resigning.

It gives me some hope that there's actually some self-limiting behavior left in politics.

Yeah, did he do this because the affair was about to come out? Of course, but I think that Clinton's failing -- such as it was -- wasn't him playing hide-the-stogie with Lewinsky, but that his contrition was so slow in coming and done after such an effort to destroy everyone who was responsible for it coming out.

I think McGreevey is twice the man Clinton ever was.

It seems to me that he knew a whole lot of other scandals were about to come out (including, but not limited to, the sexual harassment lawsuit), and decided to make this dramatic move to draw attention away from them, Andrew. The corruption and cronyism in Trenton are legendary. Now his game is to hang on to the job long enough to avoid an election (and a campaign that will shine a lot more light on that).

As for saying he's better than Clinton, I'll guess I'll agree, but that's damning him with almost inaudibly faint praise.

Didn't Clinton have Flowers on the payroll for a while? Hillary's use of Tysons commodity trader for her cattle futures trading is another NJ type deal. Clinton just kept on truckin'. Joe Klein and the rest of the MSM covered for him. Democrats aren't subject to the same laws that you and I are. There are two Americas.

"Damned by faint praise" -- that's what Alvarez said happened to Oppenheimer at the AEC meetings -- a fine phrase.

No, I know it's not saying much, but from where I see the state of political self-restraint these days, it gives me some comfort and I'm happy for it.
