Shiftless

Tim Blair is hosting a lively discussion on the virtues of clutches.

I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission.

Yes, I did. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, what are the reasons for the spread of the automatic gearbox in the US - it's unlike anywhere else I've been.

Personally, I prefer it, especially if you have to deal with heavy traffic, constant declutching is quite litterally a pain. There is some satisfaction to driving on country roads with lots of turns with lots of heavy use of the gears, but I'd rather do that in a sport's car than my everyday car (which is also not automatic)

Like Rand I have never owned an automatic car.
