Found A Phisherman

Does anyone know if there's someone who this should be reported to? Like the FBI?

[Emergency update later]

Do not, repeat DO NOT, enter any info into the linked page!!!!

It is a phishing page, designed to get your EBay password, and most preferably, your credit card info.

I apologize a thousand times for not making it more clear when I posted originally.

Sam Spade says that this address belongs to Advanced Internet Technologies, a web hosting company. If you want to file a complaint, I'd start with their abuse e-mail address - they probably don't know that they're hosting this. They're in North Carolina - as a US company, hopefully they'll be fairly responsive.

I never did get to the link, I had to input a bunch of e-bay info. What gives?

Posted by Steve at December 5, 2004 07:41 PM

Gahhhh!

That wasn't an EBay page! Please tell me that you didn't give them your EBay info.

I've ran into all sorts of phishing e-mails, usually posing to be banks, paypal, e-bay or amazon. I advise everyone of you to take the test:

MailFrontier Phishing IQ Test II

(I got 10/10 right).

I can only hope Steve was joking. :-)

Posted by Godzirra at December 5, 2004 08:04 PM

I skipped the test, because I simply assume any e-mail seeking sensitive information from me is illegitimate. There are ways I can be contacted by someone who needs to get sensitive information from me, but e-mail ain't one of them.

And especially not an e-mail from some outfit I've never personally done business with, such as "wamu.com," from which I have a message in my inbox right this minute.

Just another entry for Thunderbird's Junk Mail index.

If you're in the US, see http://www.cybercrime.gov/reporting.htm
for a comprehensive list of where to report what types of computer crime. Depending on the specifics of a given incident, a different one of the (typically) 2-4 agencies listed for that type of crime will be the correct one.

But I DO know that phishing, as a subset of their "Internet fraud and SPAM" category, is handled specifically by the FTC (just to save you some digging :-)

Outside of the US, see your local authorities for information on who to contact.

That particular page is 404 now, so it looks like someone got it. But Zach's advice is probably the best thing to do. (Or if you're savvy, you can just use whois on the site to find out who the hosting provider is, then complain, which, the one time I tried it, seems to get the site pulled really quickly.)

I feel kinda sorry for people who fall for these. My 7yo daughter recently got a spate of 'your bank account is going to be suspended' phishing attempts, and she knew it was real. Of course, she knows she doesn't have any bank accounts, which helps... :)

Rand
I always file a complaint the FBI's Internet Fraud Complaint Center http://www.ifccfbi.gov/cf1.asp
when these sites are setup. (Yes I know the form is long and they ask alot of questions, what do you expect of a federal agency?) Still its best to file it when you get the mail. Time is of the essence for any kind of investigation and the more info investigators have, the better able they will be to track them down. Even if the site is shut down they can still try and follow the money on who bought the space from the ISP's and all that. Eventually the scammers will make a mistake or a pattern will emerge. They recently caught some of Nigerian EMail scammers it took some time....but they caught some!

And for all you cynics out there, even if they are swamped and can't look into it right away it gives me warm fuzzy that perhaps some-day the Feds will bust down the door of one of those SOB's and haul them off to jail.
Also Check out the Press release page http://www.ifccfbi.gov/strategy/pressroom.asp

There they have info on some of the latest scams that they are hearing about. I got hitup by the "free" X-Box "Prize giveaway" email (I do alot of legitimate sweepstakes) but it smelled funny, especially when they asked for my Debit card number and PIN, to pay for "shipping"..Riiiiight. The sad things is people actually give this info out!

spoof@ebay.com has always worked for me. I just forward the phish to that address and ebay seems to be grateful.

Rand,
I am sorry if I sent you into a fit!!! I was actually phishing for some of my old adversaries here in Randtown.

I didn't fall for it when it showed up in my e-mail, and I did report it to e-Bay and to the FBI site listed above. I get 2 or 3 of these scam type things a week. I have even begun a file of all the "I need to get money/gold/diamonds out of Nigeria, South Africa, "Mozambike" etc. e-mails. I realized I mispelled Mozambique, but thats how the e-mail had it spelled. Thought someone might get a giggle out of it, I did.

And finally, I beg forgiveness for my littering your stretch of the internet super highway with my silliness.
