Ohio's Houston Woods State Park has had rumors of a "big cat" for years...and Houston Woods is about a 45 minute drive from Liberty. (And, no, I don't believe the rumors.)
However, the area north of Middletown is heavily populated and if a big cat of some kind was living in the area someone would have seen it. Now a Wildcat on the other hand, which I don't think of as a big cat, could probably get away with sneaking around for a long time without being seen.
My money would be on an owl or coyote (or wildcat) getting a rabbit. A rabbit's death scream is something that will haunt you for life if you hear it in the middle of the night while camping...

I am an avid outdoorsmen and frequent camper of the houston woods state park. I spend the better half of the summer and fall camping in many areas including houston woods. i know every inch of the park and know for a fact a big cat is not in the area. i am a skilled tracker and have never encountered any sort of "big cat" tracks. however i do agree with the above comment regarding death screams. Almost any vocal mammal will have a terrifing death scream that will surely frighten any amuetur woodsmen. my input on the matter is that many poeple of the area camp and party within the park... so, in my eyes i can easily imagine a group of teenagers our plain drunk folks who are unaware of the woods and anmimal life, could easily mistake a death scream, or even a coyote sighting. i have also heard a endless amount of rumors from the park from ghost sightings to crazy hobos and what not...regardless, im sceptical of the whole thing.
