Is This Justice?

While Walt Anderson did some really dumb and arrogant things, just glancing through this web site, this would appear to be less a prosecution, than a persecution.

He moved assets to the British Virgin Islands and takes trips out of the country. That sounds like some prosecutor has cause to be suspicious of his being a flight risk. If he's currently in jail, then some judge appears to have agreed. That doesn't make him guilty of anything, or a victim of anything. The People are entitled to justice, too, remember.

Check with the Wall Street Journal about the British Virgin Islands and others accused of tax evasion and flight from prosecution. I think there have been several cases written up in there. Again, cause for suspicion, nothing more than that implied in this case. But again, not proof of persecution.

Walt's entire family is devestated by the cruel and unusual punishment imposed on him prior to trial. The government has frozen all his assets so he could not pay lawyers. It took 8 1/2 months to get a public defender and she has only met with him once because she has been prevented from talking with or seeing him. He has been denied blankets and a jacket when his cell was approximately 55 degrees, denied telephone calls to lawyers (before they quite because he could not pay them)and for the past 6 weeks has been in solitary confinement. He is not allowed paper, pencil or pens, and presently no phone calls, nor reading materials, mail has been "lost" or "returned to sender", the press has not been allowed to see him and guards have harrassed other inmates who have tried to help him or who have talked with him. It is apparent the IRS has frequent contacts with the jail personnel to offer new ways of violating his civil rights. His incarceration was based on lies told by the prosecutor and accepted by the judge and he was labled a "flight risk". We have written more than 100 Congressmen, Senators and Delegate Norton. None feel able to tackle the IRS. The only positive thing we have experienced is that Pretrial Services has recommeded from the start for release on his own recognizance. We know things like this happen in third world countries. We also know that this travesty could happen to anyone, in our democrary, who is targeted by the IRS. They will take away all of the money, all the property and life as we once knew it, leaving our family with a trarnished reputation that we will never outlive.
