I heard the same thing. The mouse's name was actually Jerry Mauskowitz and after retirement in 1965 moved to Toontown, Florida. He's been writing his memoirs and will soon publish "A Mouse's Life" in which he relates that many of the stories of the cartoons he starred in were based on real life events. The cartoon "Tee for Two", for example, was based on his being banned from most golf clubs in the LA area due to his ethnic backround.

Jerry's nephew, actually, who fell into a bad crowd in Hollywood and met Mr. Spielberg. Last I heard he was rehabing at the Betty Ford for a severe Gouda addition.
