marsblogs comments are broken but .. "NASA's Doug Cooke himself pointed out in the press conference that it has been over thirty years since a manned spacecraft was developed in the US"

Huh ?? Come again ?

What's the problem? What manned (orbital) spacecraft was developed since Shuttle?

Rand

It is curious, some of the venom directed toward LM on their win. I was one of the ones that was pretty sure that BoNor would win the contract but I am hardly upset by NASA's choice.

The one thing that may be relevant to the space advocacy world and the new space biz is that with the LM win, their subcontractor Orbital Sciences may be much more inclined to put their primary efforts on the CEV contract rather than supporting Kistler's COTS team.

Another thing that is going to be interesting to watch is how LM's design teams integrate with the NASA centers that are going full steam ahead on doing their own CEV design work. I can't tell you the number of people at NASA that I know who's charge codes right now are CEV related.

Interesting indeed.

First problem : he said manned spacecraft, he didnt say orbital. Second problem : there are several manned spacecraft in development right now ( and several have been in development but cancelled )

Orbital Sciences may be much more inclined to put their primary efforts on the CEV contract rather than supporting Kistler's COTS team.

Orbital has absolutely no intention of putting effort into RPK. All they're interested in is syphoning off funds from idiot venture capitalists. Pretty much exactly like Burt Rutan did with Rotary actually.
