« I've Signed The Pledge | Main | Happy Milton Friedman Day! »

Off Line

I'm going to DC for the weekend to celebrate my birthday with Patricia, sans computer. But because it's my birthday, there are a couple of sad events to commemorate. Tomorrow will be the fortieth anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire, which occurred the day before my birthday in 1967. And Sunday, people who were born the day the Challenger was lost will be old enough to drink adult beverages legally. It makes me feel old.

And next week, we find a larger population that were around for the loss of Columbia.

Simberg

There is going to be a large Anti-war protest in DC this
weekend. Will you be in the counter-protest?

Come on you could carry a big sign that says
"You are all morons and fools".
I'll be there, look for me carrying the sign
that says "Not so silent majority"

Will you be in the counter-protest?

Rand has a life. You need to get one.

Posted by McGehee at January 26, 2007 08:09 AM

Rand, Happy Birthday! Have a good one.

anonymous, there will be too many carrying the sign you mention. So why don't you carry the sign you plan to carry and in addition one that says:

Happy Birthday Rand!

Just to be nice and civilized and all that, whatever your differences of opinion with Rand on any other issues. ;-)

I remember the fire. I was on a Boy Scout camping trip and we poured over the news paper all day Saturday in disbelief. It was the first lesson any of us had of mortality.

I started a new job the day of the Challenger loss. I was working in the Final Testing group at a nuclear power construction site. Many of the senior engineers were ex-aerospace types and it was a rough way to meet many of them. The top thought going through their heads was, "...is it something I / we could have missed. I never heard it said aloud that day, but later after they figured it out, I heard it several times.

Rand, Happy Birthday, enjoy the trip, dress warm, and by all means ignore our anon troll boy.

Happy Birthday, Rand! I wish you many happy returns of the day.

"a large Anti-war protest"

Define 'large' little man!

When are we going to discover the true identity of anonymoron? His comments are both prolific and too consistently in perfect oppositional alignment to be a real person.

Happy birthday Rand!

Happy Birthday Rand!

Let's hope that someone makes the sacrifice of the Apollo 1 and Challenger crews worthwhile, and let's reflect that every advance has had a price in blood.

Personally, I think that the prize was worth virtually any sacrifice, and I think that those crews thought so too.

I was working for North American Rockwell in Downey, CA at that time. I was so disgusted with therespones of management that I subsequently change employers to work for GE in Houston.

about capsules safety

NASA may use something like the "SAFE Shuttle Crew Escape Module" concept to design a NEW, advanced, better and SAFER Orion's Launch Abort System: http://www.bautforum.com/showpost.php?p=914200&postcount=40

Happy Birthday,

Since I was almost 2 and in Europe (born in West Germany) I do not remember...

Remember the Challenger, was watching live. Very sad.

What do you think of the cosmology belief in 11 dimensions?

Happy Birthday!

And I feel old listening to local radio interviews with Chicago Bears fans who are too young to remember the 1985 Bears and the Super Bowl Shufle.

Happy Birthday, Rand.
What made me feel old was being asked at work by a manager and a pharmacist "if I thought we really landed on the moon."
