“If you have to sell out your values and principles to get at a greater truth, where does that leave you?” said Melnyk.

“If we think it’s wrong for the government to lie and manipulate, how do we think that [left-wingers] doing it is the solution?”

I don't know how you think that, but your comrades in ideology have thought it for decades, going all the way back to Walter Duranty, and almost certainly farther than that.

Ah so, now that the Demos are in power, it's time to cut loose the intellectual thugs who were useful but who now have become embarrassments. Sort of like Ann Coulter, Mike holds down the wacko off the cliff positions which makes the rest of the gang seem moderate by comparison. It's just that the left forgot to condemn Moore and embraced him instead.

Meanwhile, the right is holding their nose while pointing at Ann, and thereby getting the benefit of condeming (and designating) the "right wing extremists". Now the lefties are catching up.

This is necessary because in the Clinton's bag of political tricks is the "paint anyone in opposition as an extremist" tool. It behoves both sides, then to clearly make the demarcation prior to the initiation of hostilities.
