Two Americas

One in which a rich tort lawyer pontificates on "two Americas" but gets $400 haircuts, and one in which that's like a bad joke.

For a man, the only hair worth having is back hair. The hair on your head is clearly a drain on the wallet and proves nothing of consequence.

Another haircut post. What's up with that? Have you talked to your analyst about this, Rand?

Posted by Carl Pham at April 19, 2007 09:03 AM

It's not a haircut post. It's a hypocrisy post.

Posted by Rand Simberg at April 19, 2007 09:38 AM

Aw c'mon guys, he's a lawyer, so probably has more than a dozen ways to get the money back at tax time. Or maybe, just maybe, the haircut place he went to doesn't like him as a candidate and charged him up the wazoo to see if he'd be so stupid as to actually pay for it. Heck, we could probably convince him to invest in Google stock at around 1000 bucks a pop.

Think of all the publicity he's getting. That's why he did it. Being a spend happy person is just part of the package. Imagine what he could do with our budget...shudder.

It's not a haircut post. It's a hypocrisy post.

Better yet, it's both.

Wasn't there an incident where Bill Clinton got a haircut on Air Force One while it was on the tarmac at LAX, effectively shutting down the airport for the duration?

That would be quite a bit more expensive than $400.

Exactly. It's similar to Gore's home energy use.

It is dispiriting as a liberal leaning independent to observe the primary options, especially that Hillary is still #1.

Mandatory hair replacement surgery for balding guys like us? ;-)

Posted by Toast_n_Tea at April 19, 2007 10:16 AM

Who you callin balding pal? Mine's retreating...okay its a rout, but still....

Yeah, he was always getting serviced at inappropriate times and places.

I don't necessarily have a problem with the guy spending $400 on a haircut. It's an idiotic way to spend money but that's his prerogative. What does catch my attention is the fact that this appeared on
a campaign financial report filed with the FEC. I take that to mean that his *campaign* spent spent $400 for a haircut. Now that's ridiculous and if I were a donor to his campaign I would be pissed.

Rand: "It's not a haircut post. It's a hypocrisy post."

That it is. If a poor or middle-class person talks about "two Americas," someone like you implies they're just envious and stoking "class hatred." But if someone with money shows any hint of citizenship and takes it upon themselves to highlight the plight of others, you call them hypocrites for daring to imply that success and responsibility are not mutually exclusive: Heresy against a basic tenet of fascism. And when someone actually proves it, like Warren Buffett, you folks talk about them like some hideous creature from Satan's managerie.

It's all Bizarro World inverse morality with the right--responsibility is childish, compassion is evil, fairness is hypocrisy, altruism is cynical, on and on. Such a bunch of diseased nitwits.

Posted by Brian Swiderski at April 19, 2007 07:55 PM

Squidward spouts: responsibility is childish

The childishness is avoiding the responsibility, like spending $400 of DONATED funds to get your hair cut.

compassion is evil

Yeah, if compassion is paying someone $400 dollars to get a haircut with money that was donated for campaigning. If he spent his OWN $400, that would be different.

fairness is hypocrisy

By all means, let's be fair. Every now has to pay $400 donated dollars to get a haircut.

altruism is cynical

Altruism??? With money donated for a different cause? That's actually fraud the way it was defined to me.

Such a bunch of diseased nitwits.

Dieseased, maybe. But spending money donated for a cause to finance a personal errand is flat dishonorable.

Mac: "like spending $400 of DONATED funds to get your hair cut."

Hey, his looks may win votes from fat single women, so he's got to maintain them.

"Yeah, if compassion is paying someone $400 dollars to get a haircut with money that was donated for campaigning."

If I randomly say "Milwaukee," will your response be "Yeah, if Milwaukee is a $400 haircut"?

"But spending money donated for a cause to finance a personal errand is flat dishonorable."

The cause is getting him elected, and he apparently thinks his hair is crucial to that. I mean, come on, the guy already looks like he just stepped out of college--with mussed hair he would look like he just fell off a skateboard.
