Who Cares?

Can anyone explain to me why I (or anyone) should give a plug nickel about what Mikhail Gorbachev thinks? About anything?

But! Wait! He ended the Cold War!*

*By, um, peacefully negotiating from a position of weakness rather than engaging in military actions that would have destroyed his nation but crippled or destroyed everybody else. So, um, he gets all the credit.

Mikhail Gorbachev deserves our attention for so many reasons.

First, he defected from the Soviet Union to the United States. That is a big plus, in my book.

Second, he has made a significant contribution to human culture through a life of innovation and mastery of ballet.

Third, his powerful portrayal of his involuntary return to the Soviet Union in the movie "White Knights" brought tears to my eyes, and increased blood flow to my private parts.

Those are three reasons that I care about what he thinks.

Uh, Gilda, you are thinking of Mikhail Baryshnikov, not Mikhail Gorbachev.
