His Real Offense

I agree with Mark Danziger that, if for no other reason, Craig should resign for this:

According to the police report, the senator presented a business card and asked, "What do you think about that?"

Of course, it's just one step beyond what most, if not all Senators do for special privileges. John Kerry was famous for his "Do you know who I am?" incidents to take cuts in line, get into restaurants, etc., which were apparently legion in Massachusetts, and other places. Senators (and Congresspeople) being human, are going to abuse their power for privilege, but an attempt to intimidate a law officer goes over a line.

[Update a few minutes later]

While I think that he should resign, I also think that this would be a perfectly appropriate response from him should he be asked by the press:

...if I were a Senator asked to vote to expel him from office, my public answer would be, “just as soon as the House throws out Patrick Kennedy.”

[Another update]

Further thoughts from Victor Davis Hanson:

Apparently it's a 'family-values' kind of guy like Larry Craig, Mark Foley, or the odious Ted Haggard, not just getting caught in homosexual scenarios at odds with their rhetoric-but in particularly disgusting acts such as bathroom trolling, solicitation of teenagers, and drug use with a male prostitute. The problem is not that these creepy people are confessing to be gay, but rather denying just that while engaging in behavior that is bizarre and repellent regardless of orientation.

Mike Huckabee, POTUS candidate and former Republican governor from Arkansas, had some interesting things to say about family values:

This will really rankle some of my Republican colleagues: Bill Clinton and Hillary went through some horrible experiences in their marriage because of some of the reckless behavior that he has admitted he had. I am not defending him on that, it's indefensible.

Just let's not let it get lost on us that they kept their marriage together. They raised a magnificent daughter. Chelsea is truly a delightful human being. ... She's polite, thoughtful, intelligent and everything you would hope a daughter to be. But they kept their marriage together.

And a lot of the Republicans who have condemned them and talk about their platform of family values, interestingly, didn't keep their own families together. Give Bill and Hillary Clinton credit for doing something we say they should have done and that is hold their marriage together in spite of enormous trials.

Huckabee, a gracious man, is putting the best possible face on the Clintons' partnership. Does anyone really think that they have stayed married primarily out of devotion to family stability rather than political expediency?

Took the words right out of my buffer, Jonathan.

I like Mike Huckabee. He speaks with a level of candor other politicians do not and he is just about the only GOP candidate that might tempt me to cross over in the general election.

However, this also means he is very, very unlikely to become the GOP nominee.

No, Bill, that's not the reason that he's unlikely to become the GOP nominee.

And just for the record, everyone here who thinks that the Clintons kept their marriage together because of their fervent devotion to family values, raise your hand.

Posted by Rand Simberg at August 30, 2007 08:36 AM

Being at best a second-tier candidate would have a lot more to do with his not becoming the nominee, than his graciousness about the Clintons.

Just saying.

Unless Rand and some of you have very intimate knowledge of the Clinton's, perhaps you could be somewhat less certain of a negative reason why they stay together.

If you do have that intimate knowledge, and it is recent and relevant, why not tell us about it?

Anyone have reason to disagree with Mike Huckabee's assessment of Chelsea Clinton?

Rudy Giuliani's relationship with his children would seem to provide an obvious contrasting situation.

I have insufficient knowledge to agree or disagree. Or care. Even if true, it's meaningless. Good people can often come from dysfunctional families, and vice versa.

Rudy Giuliani's relationship with his children would seem to provide an obvious contrasting situation.

Again, please explain to me why I, or any of my readers, would care? Or what this has to do with my post? Other than (as usual for you) to make idiotic partisan points, that is?

There is a vast literature on the Clintons, written by friends and associates, over the past thirty years, that provides more than ample basis for an opinion on why they stay together. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't bet that way.

Actually Bill, I have had (several) opportunities to meet Chelsea Clinton, and while I am somewhat cautious about drawing conlusions on such a limited basis, I believe it is far to say that she is (at best) an average human being. She is reasonably bright (though lacks even a vestige of imagination), and glib, but doesn't really strike one has having a truly significant depth of intellect. As for her personality...'perky' comes to mind, but once again...'magnificent' does not. No sin in that (given her parents, that is probably quite an achievement, actually), but when one takes into account the privileges, opportunities, etc. she has had available, it seems to me that holding her 'non-psycho' status up as some sort of victory seems a bit of a stretch.

As for Rudy and his children, many (if not most) of our great presidents had highly problematic relationships with their adult children. Are we really going to evaluate their worth based upon this?

TNT: The idea of having any 'intimate' knowlege of either of the Clintons (or their marriage) is somewhwat repellant to me, but your point is well taken. With that said, there have been more than enough leaks from people who DO have intimate (or at least direct) knowlege of the Clintons and their relationship, and the picture they paint is unusual at best.

To both of you, however, I make the following point: my own (very limited) experience wtih the Clintons, both as a family and as individuals suggests that I am quite glad that my experience with them is rather lmited. That, however, has NOTHING to do with their potential fitness (or lack thereof) for office.

To return to Senator Craig:

He has stated publicly that he is, nor ever has been, a member of the Communist Par... er, gay.

I suspect he speaks truthfully. I further suspect that it is reasonable to infer that the Senator is bisexual.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, etc.

My problem is intimate knowledge of the Clintons is too readily available, and yeah, I find it repellant as well.

Bill,

Did you click the link? I have no idea what your point is with the non-sequitor discussion about Chelsea Clinton or Rudi's kids. If you clicked the link, you might have gotten to the bottom line:

The voters of Idaho can decide what is a forgivable offense, but in the meantime the Republicans should ostracize Craig and strip him from all committee assignments, and anything else to distance themselves from this smelly albatross.

Perhaps you should go read why Victor David Hansen wrote that. But if you wanna play non-sequitor, I heard Al Gore III was caught driving a Prius.

The only really proper response to "Do you know who I am?" is "No. Do you think I care?"

Posted by Sigivald at August 30, 2007 11:11 AM

I still get startled when I look at pictures of Chelsea and Webb Hubbell.

The only really proper response to "Do you know who I am?" is "No. Do you think I care?"

Apocryphal story: during the 2004 campaign John Kerry bumped into Billy Crystal at a restaurant and gave his usual introductory "Do you know who I am?"

Crystal's reply, "Michael Dukakis in lifts?"
