Glad To Hear That

Apparently the iPhone isn't that great for blogging (if I'm allowed an understatement).

Well, neither is the Treo, with the Palm OS. I did a blog post once, just to see if I could do it, but I can't imagine doing it routinely. It would help if they would come up with a better browser than Blazer. Or maybe they have, and I'm just not aware.

On the other hand, as Stephen Green points out, perhaps it's just as well.

Rand, when I was running my own blog I used to blog regularly using my Treo 650. Don't do it via the browser. Instead, there are blogging clients you can use. This brief article lists the major ones. They work reasonably well. I could write a nice 2 to 3 paragraph post using mo:blog fairly easily. I don't know how many of these are still maintained, but it shouldn't be that hard to find out.

duh, iPhone is vastly overhyped. I have had HTC Wizard for several years with way more capabilities, and HTC Touch is a newer version with even better usability and feature spec. Oh, over here they come unbundled from networks, of course.

I've tried blogging with Windows Mobile, with a Wii, and with a PSP. On the former it's not bad, because you have a touch keypad. On the other two things, it's not much better than using a cell phone.

Iphone is pure hype.
You have linux Rand, you can already get an SSH connection to it with normal everyday smart phones that have been around for years. (I don't know if you can do it with iphone).
Now, here's a rundown of an ordinary smartphone vs the iphone. Mind the rough language and bad style:

I've got an HTC touch and a hacked iPod touch. The ipod is VASTLY superior for browsing, surfing and as a web radio. That's not to say it's in any way good, it's terrible. But the HTC touch is worse and you get used to thumb typing in about a week. I'm typing about 15wpm on mine and still loathing it, but digitally imported eases the pain... I really only use the ipod of phone for anything more on those days that I don't want to carry anything more to uni than an A4 sketchpad and a pen.

Neither device replaces my 8.9" Fujitsu P1610. It's the size of a decent paperback and with my HSDPA plan and the machine in slate mode it's bloody brilliant for browsing and scribling notes on the train. It's less than 950g and exactly the right size for typing or scribbling notes in class. It's the smallest machine that I could find that would be usable for anything remotely resembling work.
