It must’ve been pretty sudden. As I recall from his tweets, Cosmo was fine and investigating something in the bushes just a few days ago.
Actually, he had mentioned (I think in the Goldberg File) a few weeks ago that Cosmo wasn’t able to travel to Alaska this year due to his decline. So it probably wasn’t a shock. I guess the next question is how long Jasper will hold up.
