  1. I was somewhat a fan – “Hotel California” (the song) has really held up well (in contrast to some of Henley’s whiny songs on the album); almost all of the On The Border album is eminently listenable; hell, there are still songs on The Long Run that I like. Saw them live on the Hotel California tour and they were really good. Hadn’t paid much attention to them after they got back together in the ’90s. But I was very sad to hear of Frey’s passing yesterday; much more of a loss in my house than David Bowie was.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend the Eagles documentary; I think it’s on Netflix (and is definitely on iTunes). Some great footage, especially of the ’70s stuff. Frey comes off cocky as hell and a really committed craftsman; Henley is very intense but not as, well, dickish as I thought; Joe Walsh was very candid about his substance abuse problem and how the Eagles were instrumental in getting him clean; Don Felder came across as the most clueless person in rock. Also, I had forgotten just how damned hot Linda Ronstadt was at that point in time :-).
