New Fox Column

Is up. Early. I guess that happens when I actually submit it a day ahead.

It's nothing new to regular readers--it's a reprise of my "wounded media" post last week, but if you haven't been reading me much lately, go check it out--it got good reviews in its original form.

This is my first visit to this site, so I'm not certain that I'm in the right place....
I think that we should start a "Bring Geraldo Back" campaign. ...seems to me he wasn't doing anything that the talking-head generals aren't doing on their maps, every hour on the hour, on several stations.
I've heard several other reporters making statements such as, " We're on route 7, about 20 miles outside of Baghdad", etc.
Your thoughts?

Most of Geraldo's critics are on competing stations, apparently have not seen his report, and are perpetuating the idea that he gave the Iraquis a target.

The talking-head generals aren't in theatre, with Pentagon permission--there's nothing that the Pentagon can do about them. They can, however, maintain discipline on embedded reporters.

Come on, Rand. Embedded reporters make statements such as, " We're on route 7, about 20 miles outside of Baghdad", etc. OR......on one station, the "embedded" says, "We're within 20 miles south of Baghdad", while on another station, the embedded says, "We're on route 7", .....GREAT!...doesn't take a nuclear scientist to figure out WHERE we are!

Embedded reporters are told what they can say and what they can't. Sometimes the commanders want people to know where they are, for morale or propaganda purposes. Apparently Geraldo spoke out of school.

Do you buy this?

Posted by M. Hill at April 3, 2003 12:32 PM

I don't say things I don't "buy." Just what is your problem?

Posted by Rand Simberg at April 3, 2003 01:02 PM

Great article. Direct hit. Loved it.

I was under the impression that Geraldo wasn't embedded with any particular military division, and thus wasn't subject to supervision by the Pentagon.
