They Need A Better Spell Checquer

From today's WaPo:

President Bush, comforting grief-stricken family and friends of fallen Marines, praised U.S. troops Thursday for their two-week advance on Baghdad and said "a vice is closing" on Saddam Hussein's regime.

So, are they saying that the coalition is like some kind of massive vice squad?

They've even got it that way in the headline. I thought we were supposed to rely on "serious newspapers," rather than blogs, because they have editors.

Go look now, before they fix it.

It's amusing to see them criticizing the President's diction, when they don't even know how to spell "vise."

[Update at 8:45 PST]

They still haven't fixed it. I guess no one has even bothered to tell them about it. I'm certainly not.

Hilarious.

Great "helicopter" pic and the article below.

you realize, the media will just pin the blame on bush. "we spelt the words he was using! idiot shrub used the word 'vice' because he doesn't know the difference between vice and vise!"

:)

A "vise" is something used by people who work with their hands. No reporter knows what this is.

A "vice", that every reporter knows about.

According to today's best of the web, "vice" may be what the Iraqis are expecting from liberation, and they're happy about that.

Folks like booze, sex, smokes, and rock'n'roll - who'da thunk it?

Now that's funny! I wonder how long it'll take before they fix it.

Umm, I don't mean to throw water on the barbecue, but many dictionaries list "vice" as an acceptable alternate spelling for what we usually spell "vise," so it might well be intentional.

Must be one of those new age dictionaries!

Actually, AP circulated a corrected version at 12:17pm. WaPo posted it, but didn't remove the incorrect version. Still, it's amazing it got out at all.
