Why He Is A Democrat

Iowahawk explains.

He also has the lowdown (and I do mean low) on Dean's southern strategy.

Cover your data-entry device with something sputum impermeable before reading, and don't say that I didn't warn you.

He's making fun of Southerners more than he's making fun of Dean.

Posted by Donnah at December 31, 2003 11:58 AM

I think that he's poking fun at Dean specifically, and Yankee stereotypes about southerners in general.

Or are you saying the stereotypes are true...? ;-)

Posted by Rand Simberg at December 31, 2003 01:12 PM

What Rand said. It was meant as a commentary on the general cluelessness of NE "intellectuals" like Dean, regarding flyover country. No offense intended - I lived in the South for 13 years and consider myself a naturalized citizen.

Happy New Year,

Dave

"Why I am a Democrat"

God, that's funny! He nail them, and then some.

That thair Dean sure does have a purty mouth!

I'm a southron so I'm allowed to do this!

I swear, the worst of the lot are the Kucinich supporters! You have to be brain dead or a washed up hippie country musician who has fried all your brain cells with excessive overconsumption of pot and ETOH.

Case in point:

"Or are you saying the stereotypes are true...? ;-)"

A stereotype is an example that's been over-generalized, and is usually negative.
My disagreement is with the examples assumed to be in and of themselves worthy of derision. Is the very idea of snake-handlers funny? Or tent revivals?
That was the impression I got. Dave said he meant no insult, so that's fine. Your winkingly asking me if I'm saying the stereotypes are true implies that I'm supposed to say "No, they're false". Of course, they're false. They're *over-generalizations*. But the examples themselves are true, and it's the assumption that they're supposed to be viewed as being *negative* that I object to.

But you know, we're an honor-based culture and are quick to take insult. ;>

Dear lord. My old party (ex-Democrat now independent here) is such a horrific and incoherent mess, isn't it?

They really should change their name to the "Well At Least We're Not Republicans" Party.

Posted by Dean Esmay at January 4, 2004 05:11 AM

Indeed, it will be difficult for Dean to win over the sophisticated "Real Americans" of Kentucky and beyond. Consider this quote from Slate's Chris Suellentrop:

Dean's Kentucky campaign begins poorly: Letters received by Dean after he signed Vermont's civil-unions bill: "I was really sorry to read where you have allowed the passage of a bill recognizing queers to marry," wrote someone from Kentucky, "who vowed never to vacation in Vermont again." "I have been a Democrat all my life, but now that the Democrats are turning into queers, I am switching to the Republican Party. I hope you and all your queer buddies rot in hell."

Another said, "Dean Is a Faggot Lover. All Homosexuals, Go to Vermont, Dean Loves You. All Normal People, Stay Away From Vermont. A State Full Of Perverts?Run By Perverts. Boycott Fag Run Vermont." On one fund-raising walk after the bill-signing, an elderly woman walked up to Dean and said, "You fucking, queer-loving son of a bitch."

Laugh as much at the Dems as you want, Rand ... what some GOP stalwarts believe is not as funny.

MARCU$

Posted by Marcus Lindroos at January 5, 2004 04:42 AM

Marcus, not being either, I laugh at both Democrats and Republicans, but I don't see the relevance of some extreme views to a satire about mainstream ones...

Posted by Rand Simberg at January 5, 2004 09:14 AM

Marcus,

There's a problem with your reasoning.

Laugh as much at the Dems as you want, Rand ... what some GOP stalwarts believe is not as funny.

Given that the woman said

"I have been a Democrat all my life, but now that the Democrats are turning into queers, I am switching to the Republican Party. I hope you and all your queer buddies rot in hell."

She's a DNC stalwart, not a GOP one. The GOP will work to correct her intollerance.
