I Hate Basketball

The title is a disclaimer to this post.

I've written before on why I think the sport is evil, but I seem to be caught in a perfect storm. I'm watching the last half of the fifth game of the NBA finals (the first game I've watched in years), because for me, it's a twofer. I'm living in LA, which is Lakers crazy (and since I hate basketball, that just makes me hate it all the more). And I was born and bred in southeastern Michigan, so my tribal instincts out, and I get to watch the Pistons dismantle them.

The fact that they were supposed to have already lost the championship by now makes it all the sweeter. Detroit was supposed to get creamed, and instead, the Lakers would have already lost their shot at their legacy if the accused rapist hadn't had a lucky shot in the second game. I'm going to savor the fourth quarter.

Then, I'll hope once more that the sport implodes once and for all, with the collapse of the supposed superstars.

I'm sorry you don't like basketball, because it's the most watchable of all sports. But I'm glad you hate the Lakers, which is what I would expect of any red-blooded American.

Oftentimes sport foreshadows events in the Real World, so what are the odds that the victory of the hard-working, plodding, working-class Pistons over the pampered superstars of Hollywood foreshadows a Bush victory in November?

Well, obviously, watchable is in the eye of the beholder. I find basketball (and hockey, and soccer) too frenetic to enjoy. I prefer games that have some breaks and strategy (e.g., football and baseball) rather than non-stop or rare-stop action.

As for the outcome of the game predicting the outcome this November, I have no informed opinion.

I don't like basketball because of the fact that scoring is so easy. In soccer, hockey, football and baseball, etc. a team scores and its a big deal. Hell watch soccer/futbol on a spanish station and don't tell me that scoring in that sport isn't a big deal. Basketball is just so: Yea two points, dribble dribble, yea two points, dribble dribble, FOUL!! (again) Yay one point. The only half way interesting part of the game is towards the very end where hopefully both teams are still close to eachother after all that scoring and the last 30 seconds of scoring two points actually mean something.

After all this time, and I still just love this blog. Richard's too.

Sniff. I'm feeling all nostalgic now.
