Firefox Crash

I’m running Fedora 14. Firefox just crashed after running a pingtest, so badly that it crashed the entire X session, and I had to log in again. After I did, Firefox wouldn’t run. This is the relevant dump from dmesg:

I tried removing firefox and reinstalling, and npviewer isn’t a package. But still no joy. Does anyone have any idea what to do? Maybe reinstall flash?

[Update a while later]

I deleted the .mozilla folder, and it seems to be OK now. It even preserved my tabs.

  1. Is there a web site in the history that it is trying to reconnect to when it starts up? Perhaps it is trying to re-do the thing that made it crash in the first place.

  2. Move your .mozilla directory to another name, and Firefox will start clean. Your profile data (bookmarks, saved passwords, etc.) will not be brought over this way, but it will help you start Firefox and debug the problem.

Try installing Flash again, using a local user install (I’ve had trouble with the root/system-wide install).

Like Dale said, it might be trying to restore a session that connects to something that makes it crash. You can pick through the old .mozilla folder to try to find what that was.

  3. Flash is the God-damned devil.

The way it managed to crash the X session suggests it was trying to do direct rendering or the like and killed the server.

Which is awesome, in the not-at-all-awesome way.

I like Flash. That doesn’t mean you’re wrong.

So libflashplayer crashes on start-up, and deleting the .mozilla folder (!) fixes it? My guess is that our host came across a rigged Flash file intended for a Windows system, and on our host’s Linux system it choked, taking X with it.
