  1. If you really believed “old ideas, old candidates” then you could cheer up! No need to “fear for our future”!

    1. Whoops, I misquoted you. Correction: You could stop crying and there would be no need to “weep for our future”.

        1. Rejecting an idea because you view it as old is rather stupid. People on all sides fall into this trap.

        2. Yes, exactly. The left ARE conservatives.

They’re the ones trying to retain the lame old ‘progressive’ institutions that screw up everything they touch and are bankrupting pretty much every nation that adopted them. They’re the ones who keep trying to prop up unions and ‘create jobs’ in a world where 3D printers and other local manufacturing technologies are making jobs obsolete. They’re the ones demanding socialized healthcare in an era where bioengineering is going to make medicine itself obsolete in its current form. They’re the ones demanding the elimination of free speech on the Internet, because people might get new ideas. They’re the Luddites demanding we throw out decades of advances in energy production technology and revert to windmills.

Socialism is an industrial-era ideology that has no place in a post-industrial world. The left are outdated, obsolete, and about to be relegated to the dustbin of history.

  2. Yes Bobbers one of the oldest ideas in the history of humans is the one where Person A thinks it should control person’s b,c,d,e etc. whther or not b,c,d or e want that.

That idea has never ever gone away and I doubt it ever will.

Socialism is fairly old; always failed; can never succeed and yet it doesn’t go away..it’s pushed and prodded every single day.

  3. Just for the record: I think the premise is silly, and the best counter-argument can be found in the article: “If Hillary Clinton weren’t running, we’d have a field that looks like the Republican field — young and vibrant and diverse.”

    1. I have no control over what you think and, unlike your side, I have no desire to.

And even if the field was younger physically, the ideas would remain stale.

    2. I don’t think that statement is true. If Hillary wasn’t running you would have Brown out of California, an old white dude, or some other old white dude from some place else.

Who else is there, Elizabeth Warren? So young… So not white…

The Democrats have a shallow bench. The past several cycles have seen Democrats lose repeatedly at the state and local levels. They don’t have a farm team. They don’t have young politicians working their way up the ranks because Democrats have been losing for the last 15 years. That is a big hole and leaves mostly old people for their candidates.

I happen to like old people. I think they are best suited to making decisions that require wisdom. Hillary’s age doesn’t bother me. I think Rubio is too young, just as Obama is too young. But since Democrats have made it their position that old people are worthless and incapable of being President, I think its is great that people are holding them to that standard.

But the reason that Democrats don’t have a bunch of young and minority candidates this time round is because they don’t exist. The voters have not given young Democrats the chance to earn experience in elected office.

It is rather sad that the most qualified Democrat to run for President is an incompetent whose only claim to fame is riding her husband’s coattails and being a total failure as Secretary of State. She literally has no accomplishments to run on and that is the best the Democrats have to offer this cycle.

  4. I hope this thread is silly enough to permit an off-topic criticism of Obama. I find it slightly disturbing that Obama’s homeland security secretary Jeh Johnson didn’t know what a gyrocopter was.

That particular knowledge might not be necessary for his job, but I’d like somoene in his position to be a technophile and I can’t imagine a technophile getting through childhood without learning about the different kinds of flying vehicles.

    1. Bob,

I’m having a difficult time understanding why the topic is silly. Is this an attempt to dismiss the “young and vibrant” over the “old and stale”? Since the dems used it in 2008, I believe they are worried it will work against them this time.

      1. Jon, here’s what I’m calling silly: Rand’s suggestion that the oldness of the field is caused by the oldness of the ideas. It is silly because the age of the candidates (except O’Malley) reflects the perception that Hillary would win any nomination fight, and nothing more. The Washington Examiner article discusses that position in more detail.

But as a campain tactic? Not silly at all! Here’s a quote that seems relevant to this whole thread:

“Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.” – George Orwell

        1. There is some truth to Orwell’s statement. Each generation grows up in the shadows of their elders’ hubris.

    2. Ahh yes, a crazed Democrat activist flies his helicopter onto the White House lawn to “speak” to the President. This is called “silly” by some and outright praised by many in the media. Could you imagine if a non-Democrat did this to raise awareness about gun control or some other issue?

I am really tired of Democrat activists getting cut slack that we would not allow non-Democrats to have. From raping and killing their fellow protesters to burning down businesses and assassinating cops, Democrats abuse the very rights we all hold dear while also preventing non-Democrats from participating in our society by not allowing non-Democrat to associate with each other or to protest peacefully.

I don’t think this event was silly at all. It was a serious breach of security. It was a threat to the life of our President. It was an attack on the first amendment. This event should not be excused just because it was a Democrat activist promoting Democrat party ideology.

  5. “Yes Bobbers one of the oldest ideas in the history of humans is the one where Person A thinks it should control person’s b,c,d,e etc. whther or not b,c,d or e want that.

“That idea has never ever gone away and I doubt it ever will.”

Not as long as Bobbers, Baghdad Jim and other “liberals” have breath in their bodies! Serfdom now, serfdom forever!
