I was a kid when the Beach Boys rose to fame, and I remember how much I loved their music. As proof of the very solid nature of their contribution to culture, their music was parodied in the very underappreciated 1984 comedy classic Top Secret, starring the also recently deceased Val Kilmer, as famed singer Nick Rivers. The opening of the film is a music video of a Nick Rivers song “Skeet Surfin’.” All of the beach kids grab their surf boards and their 12 gauge shotguns, and go out riding the waves while shooting skeet at the same time, with a perfect Beach Boys style song overlaid. Ludicrous? Yes, but hilarious as the rest of this early Zucker entry. When I played the movie for my wife, she was blown away by “Skeet Surfin'” in particular. Yet it would not have been even slightly humorous without the context of the Beach Boys. That is the evidence of having earned a really solid place in a culture.
