It is obviously not extinct. It should have said, “thought to have been extinct.”
Well, it’s sort of a definitional/philosophical question. An extinct species is one with no living instances. Is a seed alive?
From Louis Pasteur’s principle that life comes only from life, the seed was alive since the Roman era. Dead seeds won’t sprout.
The resurrection of the Judean date palm could provide the world with a long lost snack.
