  1. My only experience along those lines was when my parents were visiting and I took a call at home for my sideline software business. I had at the time just read the humor book “How to speak Minnesotan” — it isn’t quite the same, but there are elements in my adoptive Wisconsin identity.

    The prospective customer had questions about how much it cost (I had a posted price list on which I did not offer discounts) to which I responded, “it’s a heck of a deal at twice the price.”

    Mother was more social and comfortable with this sort of thing, but Father was the Ur research engineer who was uncomfortable with “salesmanship.” Mom took me aside and expressed amazement, “Paul, I didn’t think you had it in in you!”
