Off To The Land Of Enchantment

As you can see from the sidebar on the left, this weekend is the twentieth anniversary of the first DC-X flight. I was there at the time, so it will be like old home week. I’ll be on the road most of the day (flying to Tucson, and then driving to Truth or Consequences) so blogging will be light if at all (via phone), until this afternoon or evening.

  1. If you’re in Tucson long enough to grab some food.
Try Taco Tote or get yourself a Sonoran Dog from El Güero Canelo (they also have good tortas).

      1. El Charro? ok I guess, It’s in all the tourist mags and books but it isn’t very good… it’s ok but not great. Last time I went I had the carne seca and it made me just a bit ill. Maybe I’m just use to my mother-in-law’s.
Taco Tote is better by far. Heck, the greasy spoon Frank’s on Alvernon and Pima is better. If you are only going to one Tucson restaurant, go to El Güero Canelo on Oracle just north of Grant. Order a Hot Dog and a Carne Asada Torta.
If you want something downtown try Cafe Poca Cosa, I’ve never been there but my wife said it is the best Mexican place downtown. I’ve also heard good things about Monkey Burger and the Thunder Canyon Brewery if you’re all Mexicaned-Out. Oh also, if you like seafood, Mariscos Chihuahua (the one just west of I-10 on Grande and Speedway). Even my fisherman Uncle from Minnesota was impressed with how fresh their fish was. They get it shipped in daily from the gulf.
        Shoot, Now I’m hungry.

Are you saying that it’s gone downhill? Because it’s been good every time I’ve been there for the last third of a century. I’m willing to believe that there’s a better carne seca chimichanga and green-corn tamale in town, but I don’t really want to experiment when I only get one shot at it every few years.

  2. The New Mexico chile harvest is starting! I don’t know of any places in Alamogordo (haven’t been there in years) but I can highly recommend the green chile cheeseburgers at Sparky’s in Hatch.
