  1. By a slim majority, the people of a tiny country, exactly the kind the Left has been feeding to the dictators in the name of “peace” for so many decades, stood on their hind legs and said freedom is the only thing worth fighting for, worth dying for, and they will accept nothing less than victory in that fight.

  2. By the slimmest of margins, the voters of Colombia rejected a “coalition government”, that is, one in which the insurgents were to be guaranteed a “seat at the table.”

A similar arrangement was urged/offered/encouraged by George C. Marshall to end the Chinese Civil War after WW-II and the Japanese presence was ended (not fully an occupation of China by Japan because throughout the war, there was much of China that remained a “no-go zone” for the Japanese imperial army). Don’t think this sort of thing was implemented, but Marshall’s pressure on Chang Kai-shek to relent in his pursuit of Mao’s forces gave the Communists enough breathing space that it led to who-lost-China.

The same kind of thing was always discussed as a possible peace settlement to end the Vietnam War, especially to reach a negotiated settlement prior to the end of Lyndon Johnson’s 4-year term. This led Chang’s widow to allegedly and purportedly advise the South Vietnamese government that “help was on the way” in the form of Candidate Nixon who not force such a thing if elected.

If Nixon ever committed a crime, this act that could be construed if not as treason as running interference in a duly elected US government carrying out its diplomatic policy and prosecution of the Vietnam war. With Madame Chang, this was “personal”, but what excuse could Nixon offer, that is, if Nixon actually made a promise to Madame Chang rather than Madame Chang simply making the inference of Mr. Nixon’s policy from his open and public campaign promises. And if true, of which we may never fully know, but if true, it makes Watergate “bush league” in comparison, although having used the “W” word, I expect someone to respond any minute to tell me I have it wrong.

Also if true, there were subsequent instances where candidates from a certain other political party committed similar acts, but since that time we have defined treason downward. And someone may come along to set me straight regarding the seriousness of Watergate and by comparison and implication the less serious nature of the Nixon-Chang “caper” regarding sabotage of a peace settlement under Johnson — again there may be reasons to strike that ‘tude because “the other guys” have done similar things in the following years, in the Middle East they tell me, and we can’t have that called treason because if we put down Nixon, this has to be done in the correct way that doesn’t put the Good Guys in a bad light.

So I don’t know if there is a specific example of the Communists coming to the table to accept a coalition government and then upending the table, but this ploy has a taint of being a sell out to totalitarians.

  3. Leave a toe hold for the bad guys and eventually the good guys will be searching for a toe hold. They are an infection… taking half your prescribed antibiotics is as bad as taking none.

  4. I don’t know about this. I would have voted in favor of the proposal if I lived there. The FARC might be in a funding dry spell as of late, but there has been a tendency to fund armed insurrections all over the globe. Some even claim there are now Hezbollah cells in South America. Had the proposal been accepted FARC would have been broken up. One can only hope their bloody escapades are over.

    1. The time when your enemy is on his knees is not the time to offer a hand up. It’s the time to kick him in the face.

This enemy is like a Terminator – he absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead. Give him a chance to reboot, and he will come after you again.

      1. Ya, giving them unelected seats in government for a year is incredibly stupid. A rejection and military defeat of their inhuman political ideology should not be rewarded by dictating they become part of government.
