“Alt-Right”

No, libertarians are not:

Spencer has attempted to wring as much publicity from the incident as possible—he tweeted about it no fewer than 40 times, by my count. In his mind, libertarians are “lolbertarians” who need to “accept the reality of race” and get serious about “white replacement.” To the extent that his only goal in life is to garner more attention for his fringe worldview, I suppose the stunt was a success—here I am writing about it. Congrats to you, guy who thinks “the United States is a European country.”

In any case, the incident should make abundantly clear that the alt-right’s racism is incompatible with the principles of a free society. Libertarianism is an individualist philosophy that considers all people deserving of equal rights. In contrast, Spencer is a tribalist and collectivist whose personal commitment to identity politics vastly exceeds the left’s.

Yes. “Alt-Right” is just another variation on Left.

    1. The Neo-Nazis are a joke to most of those I know on the ‘alt right’.

‘So, the British, Germans and French have been fighting each other for thousands of years, but they’re going to come together and sing Kumbaya in your Nazi utopia because they’re all white?’

It’s particularly absurd when even the UK is having a hard time holding together right now.

I’d also add that most of the ‘alt right’ that I do know are libertarians who finally figured out that you can’t have a libertarian nation if you keep letting in masses of non-libertarians. The complete failure of the ‘magic dirt’ of the West to turn non-Western immigrants into liberty-loving Americans, beer-drinking, sauerkraut-eating Germans, or feminist Swedes is what’s driving the ‘alt right’.

        1. It was the British-Americans who wrote the Second Amendment, as a more extreme version of the limited right to arms in Britain’s Bill Of Rights.

A hundred years ago, any Briton could buy a gun over the counter with no questions asked, even if they’d just walked out of jail. It was considered one of the essential rights of an Englishman, and took a devastating war that killed a large fraction of the young men before the government managed to push ‘gun control’ through Parliament.

Without the Second Amendment, guns would have been just as restricted in America now as they are in Europe.

  1. We aren’t European but the core tenets of our society were heavily influenced by Europe. Some people are trying to destroy that ideological foundation. They do so parroting KGB propaganda while screaming the Russians hacked the election.

    1. I still believe that the SJWs are largely the end result of KGB subversion programs that went completely out of control after the Soviet Union collapsed. The Soviets paid their ideological ancestors to weaken Western nations, and they’ve continued working on autopilot since the 1990s.

They want to take down the West so their Soviet masters can roll into Europe, and haven’t noticed that the Soviet Union no longer exists.

      1. It’s a universal idea going back to the beginning of time. If you want to control thought, you have to control speech.

First it was rocks at your head, then swords at your throat, and up to now it was guns at your forehead..

Today it’s a blue/pink haired person wearing a genitalia costume yelling “Shame Shame!”

      2. I agree and I would add that our problems with Muslims in America engaging in terrorism is due in part to the education they receive in our schools and the propaganda the Democrat party puts out.

  2. To my way of thinking the true right believes in economic freedom and social freedom the true left believes in government economic control and social control.

On that basis the extreme right is libertarianism, the extreme left is communism, everything in between is just people putting their self interest above any enduring principles.

  3. One problem is the need to put everyone in baskets when the truth is people, each individual, is a collection of right and wrong beliefs.

Look at any person with the most heinous views and you can still find elements of truth. By not acknowledging these truths you can end up reinforcing their heinous beliefs.

Why does Milo believe pedophilia only exists before puberty? (If that’s a fair description of what he believes?) Probably to rationalize the abuse he himself experienced. It used to be legal for 14 yo to get married, but today views have fortunately changed. This takes nothing away from his otherwise brilliant arguments but he has to be put in some basket eh?

I cringe when I hear a supremacist or racist, but I also listen for elements of truth. We can help people that are wrong by caring about what they believe. Most people may be redeemable.

    1. Why does Milo believe pedophilia only exists before puberty?

Because he was being a pedant. Having sex with someone over the age of consent isn’t pedophilia.

A gay man having sex with someone over the age of consent is an attack aimed at Republicans who find such relationships gross. It isn’t aimed at Democrats who have long supported such relationships.

      1. It’s all about delegitimizing everything he’s said, which is curious since it’s coming from so-called conservatives.

I’m uncomfortable with gays, but that isn’t all Milo is.

  4. “One problem is the need to put everyone in baskets . . .” Indeed. And when the basket contains both true libertarians and anarcho-capitalists crammed in beside the KKK and the Neo-Nazis, the basket is useless for anything but propaganda.

    1. That is so simplistic as to be ridiculous. It assumes ‘the right’ is clearly and so specifically defined that there’s no room left for debate.
