  1. The “dark night” is the point to Islam. A dark night lit only by the light that is Allah, which some right wing wags like to point out was originally a Moon God.

    Seriously, it’s interesting how backwards things started to go after communist-supported anti-colonialist, anti-“Orientalist,” Liberation-theology-type movements got their footholds in places like the Middle East, Africa, and South America. Another thing: most of the “modern” life depicted in those photos from the 50s and 60s took place in the urban, upscale, more educated centers of those countries. In the rural areas life was as medieval as ever. If we think that our urban folk treat “flyover country” with contempt, you should see how the citified upper crust did and still do treat their country cousins in other parts of the world.

  2. The good thing about space settlement is that you will leave those who reject the modern world behind on Earth.
