  1. They may be bankrupt but they at least their army has the same active manpower as Germany’s. 3x the tanks that Germany has. 2x the amount of fights. over 3x the amount of submarines.

Because Greece, unlike Germany, actually kept to their end of the NATO rules which said you had to spend at least 3% of GDP on defense. Germany spends 1.2% of GDP on defense.

Think of that next time they ask someone else to save their butt. The Germans better hope Uncle Vlad doesn’t feel like crossing the border.

    1. One of their submarines alone (which they bought from the Germans) cost as much as they have to pay the IMF this year.

    2. True, but recall also that the Greeks have at least since the 1967 coup, and really, much longer than that, have been arming for a war with Turkey, not a war with Russia. The miltary junta cared one whit for NATO. Papandreou and the Red regime were loud and obvious Warsaw Pact sympathizers–that is the most charitable term I can think of for a group who would in the event of a shooting war have almost certainly changed sides and declared war on NATO and the US in exchange for the opportunity to get a few shots in at the Turks. Since Papandreou we have seen a succession of openly Marxist regimes in Greece whose hostility to Turkey and the West has been replaced by apathy and an opportunistic desire to milk British and German taxpayers for as many free goodies as they can before the whole thing comes crashing down.

  2. All one had to do was read the financial blogs sometime in the last five years, but that would have been to much work—Look! Hillary!
