    Very human but thinking like this is why we are in the bad spot we are in now. People need to think beyond their own self interest.

    This mentality leads to after school programs and bike lanes not good policing or friendly policies toward entrepreneurs.

    1. The ideal would be if everybody voted out of patriotism. Next best would be if they voted their own individual interests; cf. Adam Smith about the butcher, the brewer, the baker. Third best, I hate to say, would be if they voted their party, which perhaps they inherited from their parents, but which is in any case a grossly artificial granfalloon. Worst of all, I fear, is if CTG gets his way and people vote their race, because as artificial a *that* is it seems to be something people identify with on a deep level, deeper than party, and structuring your society around this is how you get hatred and violence, hutus and tutsis.
