Happy New Year

And good riddance to 2013. Let’s hope that it won’t have turned out to be an average year — worse than the one before, better than the coming one.

One good thing about it, though. It’s the year that defiance of the State became cool.

[Update a while later, watching a rerun of the Rose Parade]

That was the year that was — Dave Barry summarizes the suckitude of the past twelve months. We laugh so we don’t cry.

  1. Feliz ano nuevo, as they say in Japan. Let’s hope 2014 is better. I’m not counting on it, however.

  2. The hippies have been defying the state since the 60’s over growing organic produce in their
front yards, Putting solar arrays on the roof of their houses, and smoking marijuana.

Then the techno-hippies came up with strong public encryption, which the state has hated.

And Manning, Snowden and Swartz, are all progressive liberals.

    1. And here’s to hoping that in 2014 all progressive liberals follow the examples of Manning, Snowden, and Swartz, taking them as roll models, and end up serving life in jail, fleeing the country, or hanging themselves. ^_^

      Was that harsh?

    2. Oh yeah, some defying the state. Getting stoned sure showed them what for. And then they voted for mandatory health insurance. If you are going to truly defy the state, you can’t then turn around and co-opt its authority and still remain true to the cause.

  3. Here’s my favorite story of the year so far.

Who just got called in to provide critical weather forecasting data to the Russian ship trapped in the ice off Antarctica? Anthony Watts.

    1. I’m glad it was awesome for you, Trent. Truly! At least one person had a good 2013. That by itself gives me hope for the future!

  4. Sio, dn-guy is actually FOR defiance of the State? If so, he is the world’s worst communicator. All his previous posts give the impression that he is a lockstep, Hive-brainwashed, New Tory State-humper.
