  1. Actually a better comparison would be between modern Everest expeditions and space tourism. The majority of the folks climbing Mount Everest these days aren’t doing it to expand human knowledge, but merely for bragging rights and self gratification. And since it is a big money maker for Nepal, and privately funded, the “expeditions” will not stop as a result

  2. If it were a dozen celebrity climbers just seeking an expensive thrill (as opposed to local grunts), would there be a call to ban future private climbs? I honestly don’t know?
