  1. The first I ever learned about methane, when I was a kid, was about how astronomers believed it was a major component of the atmospheres of other planets in the Solar System where, at the time, the notion of life there was pretty much ruled out.

    So I was mollified somewhat when I got near the end of the article and saw the acknowledgment of possible “abiotic” sources of methane.
