Has it been here (at least in the Bay Area) a lot longer than we thought? I think it’s quite plausible that it was here in December, which in a sense is good news, because it probably means we already have a lot more herd immunity than we thought, and the fatality rate is much lower than earlier fears.

Back in mid February, my elderly mother had a case of something. We thought it was just a common bug of some sort. Scratchy throat, intestinal cramps and other issues, mild fever, body aches, and moderate shortness of breath (felt like there was no air in the room). Slight dry cough. She was sick for about 4 days, pretty much slept for two of them. Took her about a week to be basically over it.
I had something as well, back in late January and early February. Very mild fever (just for a few hours), mild cough, some intestinal issues, and something weird. Pain while inhaling, from the lower diaphragm area. It faded away, but took weeks to go away entirely. Other than the diaphragm area pains, I only felt effects for about 48 hours, and nowhere near as bad as, say, an average cold. My mom lives close by and I’m her only caretaker, so if she had this thing, she probably got it from me.
And… might be coincidence, but on Jan 23rd I opened a package (and handled the contents, a lot – I was quite oblivious to the virus news until late January) that had been shipped 3 days before, from somewhere in China. I just did some looking into that issue, and going by the makes of the item (LED bulbs) a search leads me to Guangzhou, but some links to the area just south of Wuhan.
I think I’ll be buying a couple of the antibody tests when they become available. I’d both welcome and dread a positive test indicating my mother and I had had this thing. I’d welcome it for obvious reasons, but I’d also have the fact that I probably almost killed my mom by ordering those dang bulbs and not taking precautions.
Don’t buy the ones made in China, I wouldn’t trust them to give the correct indication. They could be rigged to give a false positive for the antibodies, leading people to go out and get exposed.
I try to avoid buying *anything* from China, a rule I’ve had for years.
For a test kit though, if my only choice is one from China, I’ll buy a pair of dice instead – it’d be more likely to give me an accurate result.
