What are the chances that Oremus (Slate’s senior technology writer) will amend his story to be less biased? But I jest.
The term “denier” has several levels. It’s meant to cause people to link (unconsciously) the “skeptic” with those who deny that the Holocaust happened. The evidence of the Holocaust is overwhelming and incontrovertible, so anyone who denies that is clearly wrong. Also, the Holocaust was a horrific event in which millions died. The “denier” is thus linked (also unconsciously) with ignoring what is to be a horrific event in which millions die. Finally, the “denier” is an epithet which resembles another perfectly fine name that was used as the epithet that enabled the Holocaust: “Jew.” What could be more effective, and more insulting to all parties that that?
All in all, I would say that we Progressive Leftists have outdone ourselves with this one. High five, Comrades Jim, dn-guy, Bob-1, Admiral Gerrib!
