  1. One diet fact I’ve come across recently…

It turns out that fruit is a major source of methanol in your diet. Fruit contains pectin, which is a carbohydrate modified with methoxy (CH3O-) groups. Bacteria in your gut cleave off methanol, which your body absorbs.

Methanol concentrations in your blood rise dramatically after eating fruit. What’s more, most of that methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde (before being further oxidized to formate, and then CO2). Human exposure to endogenous formaldehyde far exceeds exposure to environmental formaldehyde, but the government still saw fit to regulate the latter as a carcinogen.

  2. I don’t usually read articles on PJ Media. That site is so slow and clunky that it just isn’t worth bothering to click over to try and get it to load. In this case, I did try to read your article. I was able to read the first page, eventually, but, as usual, trying to get page two to load froze my browser for about 5 minutes. Even with my fairly swift work computer, PJ Media is too much of a pain to bother with. It’s a shame, some interesting writers there. Feels like being back on a dial-up modem.
