Unfortunately for those that spent a fortune on a degree with no future. Your day may have passed. None of the baristas I have met would have the right stuff to perform critical welding, or plumb a house.
Many of the skilled tradesmen that are self employed have given up on hourly employees. It is quite possible to CLEAR more money working alone than with second rate (at best) help. I have somewhat joined that group as I have transitioned my people from hourly to subcontract. Those young people that are not getting on the job training because they are more trouble than they are worth will continue to be almost unemployable in skilled trades.
I would recommend a program of college debt forgiveness for folks who complete trade school and earn a master’s license (that’s not the same as a master’s degree. It usually means you know enough not to be dangerous to yourself and others for starters). To be paid for by taxing colleges that offer degrees in comparative literature. Offset of course by the number of graduates actually getting paid to do comparative literature. Degrees in Marxist religion would not qualify for any offsets.
