  1. Nuke it from orbit – it’s the only way to be sure.

And I have spent most of my life in Los Angeles…

  2. The embedded video about homeless in Hollywood was striking. I was struck by the one apartment ad: 536 square feet, starting at $2,840 per month. Rand has stayed at our place in Virginia a few times, and can attest to the fact that it’s…well, quite a bit bigger than that (and a single family dwelling). Our mortgage is almost exactly what the starting rent is for that studio apartment.

When I worked on the 2006 XPRIZE Cup, we had offices in an apartment complex in Hollywood, on the corner of Argyle and Yucca. The Capitol Records building was diagonally across Argyle from us. Even back then, Hollywood was a pit. We worked late hours, and I routinely escorted my female colleagues to their cars at dusk or later. Nothing else was safe. The ground beside the sidewalk was littered with syringes and used condoms. I can’t even imagine what it’s like today. Having seen some recent videos of Venice Beach, however, I bet it’s pretty disgusting.

    I sympathize with Flight-ER-Doc.
