RIP, Paul Newman.
You can’t live a life much more full than he seemed to. And unlike many of his Hollywood colleagues, the one way that he didn’t seem to fill it up was with promiscuity and infidelity. It’s all too rare that an actor is faithful for decades. Of course, as he noted himself, it probably helps to be married to Joanne Woodward.
I hadn’t realized that he was a flier in the Navy in the Pacific. It’s always tempting to say that they don’t make them like that any more, but I suspect that they still do. A lot of them probably served in Iraq in the last few years, and we’ll be hearing from them in the future.
I think my favorite (and the most under-rated imho) movie he did was “Nobody’s Fool”. Utterly believable portrayal, 30 seconds in I no longer saw “Paul Newman acting like Sully” but I saw Sully himself on screen. I never knew about his wartime service, either although it doesn’t surprise me. I agree wholeheartedly about the future of this country, given the service of our people in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and the mark they will make as veterans and citizens. Like Mr. Newman’s generation, I think this next one will make us proud, too. Paul Newman will leave some mighty big shoes to fill, though. RIP.

Another giant passes; they really don’t make them like that any more. RIP.

Frankly I have no use for most celebs. But Mr. Newman was a class act. And the charity work he did with Paul Newman’s Own products speaks well of the man.
Many people are born, live and die without impacting anyone beyond a small circle of friends and coworkers. Mr. Newman reached out to many people in need and offered comfort.
