He was a courtly State Department intelligence analyst from a prominent family who loved to sail and peruse the London Review of Books. Occasionally, he would voice frustration with U.S. policies, but to his liberal neighbors in Northwest D.C. it was nothing out of the ordinary. “We were all appalled by the Bush years,” one said.
So, who could blame him for spying for a communist dictator?

For the youngsters and political non-junkies out there, Bill is (apparently) invoking an apocryphal quote attributed to New Yoker columnist Pauline Kael.
One thing that amazes me about the Castro personality cult is that it attracts blacks – people who know the horrors of the segregationist South far more than Kael allegedly knew Nixon supporters. One must conclude that Danny Glover and his ilk have no idea what life is like in Communist Cuba.

The common thread that explains the attraction of a Castro or Islam is that “resist Whitey” and “bop The Man”** are expressions of authentic Blackness(TM).

At least it is refreshing to see people who did not spy for the money. Like the Walker family, Kyle Conrad (from the Canasta Player case), etc.
The KGB/GRU always told its recruiters that Americans could be bought a lot faster than they would respond to ideology. And they were right. They used the acronym MICE – Money, then Ideology. I don’t know what C or E stood for since they were so seldom resorted to.
