They Told Me That If I Voted Republican…

…that black people would get beaten up by racist thugs in the streets. And they were right:

Last night in St. Louis, Missouri, a local conservative found out firsthand about the “Chicago way.” Kenneth Gladney, a black conservative from the city, was handing out “Don’t Tread On Me” flags after a Russ Carnahan town hall meeting on health care in Mehlville. This didn’t go over well with the Obama supporters and union thugs who attended the meeting. They punched him in the face, kicked him in the head, and stomped on him on the pavement. So much for hope and change.

Well, the change is that they probably won’t be prosecuted for it, as they probably would have been under a Bush Justice Department.

[Update a while later]

This is a pretty incredible story. I mean, violence from union members? Who’s ever heard of such a thing? Anyway, I expect that at his next news conference, the president will point out that the man handing out the signs was behaving stupidly.

[Update late afternoon (Pacific)]

Mary Katherine Ham has an interview. I heard one with him on Cavuto in the car at lunchtime as well. It will be interesting to hear if the ACLU or NAACP has anything to say about it. Or if the latter lives down to its name of the association of “liberal” colored people.

[Update a few minutes later]

And as usual, what does a Democrat do when confronted with wrongdoing by his supporters? Blame it on Republicans.

[Another update]

I’m on the left coast, so I missed this episode with my own (worthless, or actually of negative worth) Florida Congressman (soon to be be my ex-Congressman, since we’re almost certainly moving somewhere, and probably back here to LA):

Though only a handful of constituents typically show up at the Lighthouse Point public library once a month with questions for U.S. Rep. Ron Klein’s staffers — often questions about Social Security checks or passport applications — this time about 100 people packed the room for two hours.

The group was rowdy, rude and fired up about healthcare.

“Where the hell is Klein?” demanded Republican activist Ana Gomez-Mallada, even though the congressman was not scheduled to be there. Others branded him a “coward” and a “communist.”

The natives are definitely (and justifiably) growing restless.

  1. According to the StL Dspatch, the police were doing plenty of shoving themselves. While I don’t want to defend the thugs who took down Gladney, the violence was going in both directions according to the press. For every peaceful black handing out literature, there was at least one self-styled Obama hater who had her dentures bared, wielding her cane over her head.

Plenty of hate to go around. Plenty of fingers to point in both directions. Some rather arthritic.

Yeah, and the press is looking into those swatiskas that Nancy said they were wearing.

  3. When you have a President that says that demagogues anyone that doesn’t agree completely with his own party and then says ‘I don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess’ then what do you expect people to do? We’re not going to just get out of bed tomorrow and become Democrats.

This kind of behavior from the President and Democratic party cannot be healthy for our Republic. If one of these gets out of hand (you’ll never know who started it) then it’ll spread. You shouldn’t expect civility when you are threatening to radically change the social contract in a way that contradicts half the country’s political philosophy. You can push people to far.

While I wish you the best, I was rooting for Canada, as you mentioned this was a possibility. I was looking forward to your commentary on life North of the border, where the very liberal Head of State ate a raw seal heart. (www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story/2009/05/26/jean-seal.html)

  5. “It will be interesting to hear if the ACLU or NAACP has anything to say about it.”

Rand, Rand, Rand – silly you.

    They’re busy washing their hair.

By the way, I’m not sure why you’re moving, but are you sure you want to move to California right now? (Since you’re a producer, not a leech.)

  6. are you sure you want to move to California right now?

I have mixed feelings about it — there are places I’d rather move — but it’s the path of least financial resistance right now (we still have a house here, that’s held most of its value). And I have to say that after five years of exile in Flat Hot/Humid Florida, it still feels like home when I go outside and see the mountains, and feel the cool ocean breeze, despite the insanity of the electorate and the moronity of those they elect in Sacramento.

  7. There are other states with saner politics and mountains, like Virginia. It appears to be swinging away from being a blue state in a hard way. Bob McDonnel has a tremendous lead in most polls.

  8. What Mike said, Rand. Come on up to Virginia. It’s not as dry as California, but it has mountains and the ocean and (unlike much of Cali) is mostly green. If your house in Cali has held its value (and could be sold relatively easily), and y’all’s work is such that it’s not critical where you live, come on up and settle down here. (Though I’d suggest you avoid Northern Virginia, which is just D.C. with trees and better houses.)

My work isn’t the issue — hers is.

  10. “My work isn’t the issue — hers is.”

What – you mean there are no easy answers? Bummer. ;-p

Seriously, y’all will do what you must, and we’ll keep coming here to your blog and offering our free advice (worth every penny you pay for it, too!) no matter where you live.

(Really, Northern Va. is kinda like LA – overpriced and gridlocked. If she can find work there, you could do worse.)

    Well, maybe we did. 😉

It was one of the possibilities, but it didn’t pan out. And the weather really is nicer here in many ways (though I would like to have a fall, and thunderstorms). California really is one of the most geographically blessed places on the planet. It would be paradise if not for the Californians… 😉

  12. I find it ironic that the man who was attacked is taking a collection because he has no health insurance.

I bet you wish you had an edit button. It’s nice to have this evidence of you spreading around misinformation like the good Democrat that you are.

  13. The misinformation is from Gladney, the man who was attacked. His attorney told a crowd of 200 people that Gladney did not have health insurance and was accepting donations. Gladney also told local reporers he didn’t have coverage.

Please read the link, Leland. By the standards of this blog, I should ask when was Gladney lying – before or after the statement to the crowd.
